• Cinderford library may indeed see its doors remain open, after objections from residents and action groups have prompted Gloucestershire council to invest another £500,000 into its library budget.

The current plans, however, would still leave 10 of Gloucestershire’s libraries at risk of closure, if volunteers cannot be found to help run them.

The Friends of Gloucestershire Libraries action group, formed by county residents to object to proposals which would have seen a severe reduction in available library services, have said the revised plans “go nowhere near far enough”. Criticisms have also been levelled at the processes lack of transparency, saying: “These revised plans have been announced with four consultation sessions still to be held and an online consultation survey which runs until the 11th February. Are the people attending these sessions and completing the survey between now and then to assume that their views will not be taken into account then?”
